Our History
Mater International Institute of the Sacred Heart: Tradition and Innovation
At Mater International Institute of the Sacred Heart, we are both tradition and innovation. Tradition, as part of the global Sacred Heart Network, which includes more than 140 schools in over 40 countries, with a legacy spanning more than 200 years worldwide, over 140 years in Mexico, and more than 115 years in Monterrey. Innovation, as we continue to shape a forward-looking institution that provides enriched learning ecosystems, balancing the use of technology with deep respect for the individual.
Our educational model is student-centered, preparing leaders with critical thinking, research skills, and socio-environmental awareness—equipping them to transform the world. With an intercultural approach, we promote English language development through immersive experiences that strengthen the acquisition process.
We are proud to hold accreditations and certifications from internationally recognized organizations and platforms such as Cambridge, Habildmind, Common Sense, Apple Teacher, Google, among others—ensuring quality education that meets global standards.
We also nurture the ethics of care through sports and cultural programs that encourage teamwork, discipline, health, and well-being. Surrounded by generous green spaces, our students grow in appreciation, respect, and love for nature.
Through our Christian Social Formation program, we guide students in developing self-awareness, conscience, and interiority within an environment that supports their social-emotional growth. Our goal is to form responsible, compassionate, and transformative citizens who build a culture of peace through positive relationships.
Our History
In 1908, at the request of Archbishop Leopoldo Ruiz y Flores and a group of parents seeking a strong Christian education for their daughters, the Religious of the Sacred Heart—founded by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat—opened a school for girls on Morelos Street in Monterrey.
Later, on July 2, 1913, the school moved to new facilities, which today house the “Carmen Romano” School of Music and Dance in Monterrey, where it remained until 1965.
In 1962,
Instituto Mater, A.C. was officially established.
In 1965, the school moved to its new facilities on the former Chipinque Highway, now Gómez Morín #1000, in the Municipality of Garza García, N.L.
Starting in 1970, a group of volunteer Catechist Mothers began supporting the Christian education of students, contributing to their formation and values.
From 1977–1978, the school welcomed students with special educational needs. In 1992, this work was formalized with the creation of the Inclusion Department, achieving outstanding results in supporting these students’ learning experiences.
In 1990, under the initiative of the General Direction, the Cultural Institute for Adults (ICA) was established, which continues to expand and update its educational offerings to this day.
In August 2016, the school became Sacred Heart Mater International Institute, responding to the growing need to prepare students for a globalized world.
Today, the school continues to renew and innovate in its academic programs, teaching methodologies, facilities, and services, ensuring an education that is both rigorous and forward-looking.
